Innovative technology R&D

In order to continue enhancing corporate value, Unimicron actively refers to and participates in the development of technical blueprints for the international industry, and has developed five strategies to meet the needs of various future products. At the same time, Unimicron actively invests in environmental protection and low-cost processes, to establish an industry centered on technological innovation and intellectual property right autonomy. Unimicron uses innovative breakthroughs to expand business opportunities.

Unimicron recognizes the important role value chain cooperation plays in driving the industry towards sustainable innovation. In addition to working with international manufacturers to develop next-generation high-end IC carriers and interacting with customers, the Company also understands customer needs for technology and next-generation products, and keeps tabs on the blueprint for customers' future products. We strengthen cross-sector cooperation among domestic industries, create our own industry and equipment products, strengthen research and development relationships between industry, academia and research institutes, drive the industry to set new specifications, and promote industrial restructuring or optimization. We will continue to meet customer expectations with the best quality and service model, lead the overall industry chain forward, and create more value.

Strengthen cross-sector cooperation among domestic industries

From 2016 to 2019, Unimicron had two A+ Industrial Innovation R&D Programs (hereinatier referred to as “A+ Program”) approved by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and we are leading one of the programs to collaborate with four other companies. Unimicron received more than NT$86.46 million in subsidy from the government to develop panel-level ultra-fine pitch Fan-out technology. With the successful development of this project, we will provide further information for the industry’s reference, which may help strengthen cross-field cooperations among Taiwan’s industries.

Develop our independent industry and equipment products

There are many large-scale companies in the semiconductor industry that use several large plants in Japan, South Korea, Europe, and the United States. Unimicron hopes to accelerate research and development, assist manufacturers of equipment and materials, create our own research and develop- ment, and become self-sufficient in the domestic industry in terms of equipment and materials technology. We hope to form a complete supply chain that can increase the overall output value of the semiconductor industry and strengthen the overall output value of the domestic semiconductor industry to fight against the emerging red supply chain.

Strengthen research and development relationships between industry, academia and research institutes

In the past three years, Unimicron has had long-term cooperation plans with domestic universities such as Tsinghua University. The amount of investment reached NT$9.32 million in 2016, NT$9.2 million in 2017, NT$8.2 million in 2018, and will exceed NT$10 million in 2019. Unimicron hopes to provide an example of a strengthened research and development relationship between industry, academia and research institutes in Taiwan through industry-academia collaboration. Effective use of research from academia may shorten the learning curve. At the same time, research from domestic research institutes combined with basic science may lead to the stimulation of original ideas.

Drive the industry to set new specifications

The 5G IoT product development plan and ultra-small pitch LED module development plan of Unimicron's R&D Department are all new plans. The industry has not established a standard for product quality certification or testing. With Unimicron's investment, once the next generation product quality certification or testing is reached, new specifications can be set for the industry, thus forming an entry threshold for technology that prevents other competitors from easily entering this field and protects the Company's commercial interests. Unimicron is also willing to share these plans with the industry.

Promote industrial restructuring or optimization

The new technology plan for IPM & Power SiP products developed in 2018 has changed the current industry chain of the carrier market. It is focused on the technological development of advanced package substrate products and direct cooperaons with manufacturers and ITRI to develop a new IPM model. At this stage, the IMB w/ 175um Cu trace sample design and process opmizaon have been completed. We hope through cooperaon, the synergy between various manufacturers can improve the compeve- ness and profitability of the industry, Strengthen the internaonal compeveness of Taiwan's industry and bring huge niches to domesc industries in response to the challenges from Japan, South Korea, and the red supply chain.

R&D and Collaboration Program

Collaboration with Suppliers To ensure our products’ leading position on the world stage, we collaborate closely with world-class material and equipment suppliers, introduce high-functional materials and state-of-the-art equipment in product development, and also work with domestic equipment suppliers.
Collaboration with Academia We work closely with domestic and overseas research institutes and academia, which includes joining the System Packaging Consortium of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), IZM (Germany) and Georgia Institute of Technology (the U.S.) to co-develop a number of new products and technology. We work closely with a number of well-known universities such as Taiwan National University, National Tsing Hua University, National Chiao Tung University, National Central University, Yuan Ze University, Chang Gung University, and Chung Hua University. We have also established a cross-disciplinary research and development program to accumulate research and development at National Tsing Hua University and Yuan Ze University.
Collaboration with Government We received tax exemptions, investment tax credits and incentives for equipment, and subsidies through Industrial TDP from the government.
